Mr. Kovach also provided the following information about his military service:

We were assigned to clear a road of land mines in the mornings to ensure that convoys could proceed safely. After the mines were cleared, convoys were picked up and escorted from Pt. A to Pt. B. During one morning detail, however, we discovered booby traps and thought we had exploded them all with plastic explosives. Unfortunately, we did not realize some had not exploded until we passed and they exploded injuring my Lieutanant, myself and three of my fellow soldiers.
